CHARACTERS î Shaggy Dogs and Black Sheep Albert Jack's Shaggy Dogs and Black Sheep is a compulsively readable highly enlightening look at the phrases we use all the time but rarely consider The English language is crammed with colourful phrases and sayings that we use without thinking every day It's only when we're asked who smart Alec or Holy Moly were where feeling 'in the pink' or 'once in a blue moon' come from or even what letting the cat out of the bag really means that we realize that there's far to English than we might have thoug. I did find some inaccuracies and omissions in this book as well as considering it very British centred Nelson got a signal to his ship during the Battle of Copenhagen but said I see no signal not I see no ships as is stated in the book I don t know about Britain but here in Ireland the cat s pyjamas is well known and used not almost forgotten I ve never heard or seen pick the bones out of that but I have heard and seen I ve got a bone to pick with you While telling us that the black sheep was less popular with shepherds because the wool could not be dyed the author has not asked any shepherds about black or brown sheep These sheep get warmer than white sheep on a sunny day so they go to seek shade making them harder to see and round up as well as making it look as though they are loners or unpopular with the flock Thus the black sheep of the family The nautical element is present of course but again many omissions Three sheets to the wind Shot across the bows Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey Cannonballs This is a family friendly book Can t fathom that None of these are present So while the book is an amusing list putting many phrases and words in context it s not complete which I suppose no such book could be and warrants a double check before using as a reference This is an unbiased review Gloom Town got a signal to his ship during the Battle of Copenhagen but said I see no signal not I see no ships as is stated in the book I don t know about Britain but here in Ireland the cat s pyjamas is well known and used not almost forgotten I ve never heard or seen pick the bones out of that but I have heard and seen I ve uinze dias got a bone to pick with you While telling us that the black sheep was less popular with shepherds because the wool could not be dyed the author has not asked any shepherds about black or brown sheep These sheep Cheating for the Chicken Man get warmer than white sheep on a sunny day so they The Last Runaway go to seek shade making them harder to see and round up as well as making it look as though they are loners or unpopular with the flock Thus the black sheep of the family The nautical element is present of course but again many omissions Three sheets to the wind Shot across the bows Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey Cannonballs This is a family friendly book Can t fathom that None of these are present So while the book is an amusing list putting many phrases and words in context it s not complete which I suppose no such book could be and warrants a double check before using as a reference This is an unbiased review
